What is Lipedema?
Lipedema (lipoedema) is a chronic disease in which pathological fibrotic fat grows and accumulates in the hip, legs, and arms. Lipedema fat is different from normal fat in that it causes extreme pain, tenderness, and easy bruising. Often referred to as painful fat syndrome, lipedema is a connective tissue disorder that excusively affects women and usually manifests bilaterally, with both extremities involved. In the United States, lipedema is often misdiagnosed as obesity. Patients are told to diet and lose weight. This is frustrating for the lipedema patient because lipedema fat is resistant to dieting and exercise.
